There are a ton of people claiming to be music marketing experts, music advertising experts, and social media experts. Yes, literally thousands and thousands. When it comes to marketing and publicizing your music, you have a wide variety of good choices. RIGHT? Wrong – tons of choices – yes but how many of them are really worth their salt? Not a lot!
For some reason the unscrupulous “bees that want music” prey on musicians – I don’t know why, maybe they think they’re easy to hit. Maybe they don’t like musicians or worse yet – don’t like music. (WOW) A lot of these people are or were musicians themselves, or maybe an intern somewhere in the music industry, or love music. They believe this gives them the right to call themselves an expert in music marketing, or worse yet, a music publicist who takes many years of experience in the music industry and the accumulation of thousands of media contacts. music, and furthermore, advertising the best possible product or service will speed up your music career.
Well, here’s what I have to say about it: I have been a musician myself – although a long time ago, then, there were still many crooks in the music industry. I have experienced the deep pain of being fucked by unscrupulous people claiming to be my savior in the music world. The internet and the leveling of the independent music playground opened up a huge amount of opportunities for these sharks and con artists to work on their game. The only way my band was successful was luck – we found the good honest people.
Here is a checklist to seriously consider when choosing your ultimate advertising or marketing service:
Check Their Credentials – And Follow This Checklist
Do they have a honorable online presence?
Do they have hundreds of testimonials? Or, as I like to call them TRUSTIMONIALS – Check their references!
How many years of “HONEST” experience do they have? Worm! Fy this
Have they written hundreds of articles on music marketing?
Do they belong to many high profile organizations in the music industry?
Does the potential marketer or publicist answer all of your questions
or do they subtly elude them?
Will they tell you who and where they will promote your music?
that is, their music media affiliations – or are they telling you to wait and see?
Have you seen proven samples of their work?
Will they give you what they promise in writing?
Before making a choice, think about –
INTEGRITY – HONESTY – TRANSPARENCY
Besides doing a great job that actually helps you in your career, these are probably the three most important things to consider.

BE CAREFUL, YOU COULD BE SCAMED
Being lucky enough to find the right people for our project at the time, I am not saying that it is impossible to do so. I’m just saying that it’s extremely important, especially these days, to do your homework and do your due diligence before you fork out your hard-earned money. Most independent musicians are on a tight budget and every penny means something to them. Take the time to speak with a reputable music industry consultant if you wish. Most will be able to recognize a scam when they see it.
So to all the unscrupulous sharks out there waiting to pounce on the next unsuspecting musician, sorry for writing this article – but you must be exposed. Therefore, I am not really sorry. It’s people like you who give the music business, honest advertisers, and music marketers a bad name. Shame on you! I love my Indies and all the musicians and artists and it hurts to see them exploited. Try another niche ‘- maybe people who need marketing help selling rockets or industrial products and services. BUT – Leave our musical niche alone !!
