Music can really make the world go round. Music has the ability to unify people in one thought, be it peace, harmony, joy, or a specific cause, and it has changed the word one song at a time. But the music was limited and underappreciated by many. Not because the music was of poor quality then, but because it was not as accessible as it is today. Today we have the freedom to access all kinds of music through the help of technology. Therefore, knowledge and appreciation of the music industry has grown tremendously in such a short time.

Long before the Internet was famous, music was reserved for a smaller audience. Some of the most powerful songs written have been sung and played underground for fear of other bigger issues like communism, capitalism and war. With the emergence of e-commerce, the world has become a giant playground for music of different ages, scenes and styles. E-commerce has opened up a new way of hearing music in other places where it can be enjoyed to the fullest. Buying music online has become so easy and fast that it has broken down barriers not only of geography, but perhaps also of culture. When music started its way online it became a new for profit industry.

Didn’t we know then that the music industry would be as big as it is now? Today, song sales on iTunes, eBay and Amazon are in the billions of dollars a day and that only counts the United States. Thanks to e-commerce, stars were born like Coldplay and Beyonce. These artists could only have been famous in their country, but the internet has turned them into international super stars as e-commerce has made it possible for anyone to buy their songs all over the world. Even small independent artists and underground bands can now showcase their talent online through e-commerce, giving every artist a chance to go big where the music business is a little more leveled.

Buying songs online has also given the consumer more freedom to choose which songs they want to spend on. In the old days, songs had to be purchased with the entire album, but today you can purchase the song individually. It has increased sales more than ever. Not only are the songs available, but they are also available as soon as the album hits the market. This makes them available online to anyone in the world as soon as the song is released. This functionality of e-commerce helps to make music more competitive and efficient globally. There is no longer any discrimination as to who and when these songs cannot be heard.

Some negative effects have also hurt the music industry. Because the Internet is so accessible and easy to use, illegal download exchanges have also flourished. This development is slowing the profits of electronic commerce because now music can be taken for free. Current means are being tried to control this phenomenon.
