You know what a ‘pattern’ of a house looks like!
I know… ‘house pattern’ sounds kind of weird. But I might as well have told you I’m looking at a house, and you would have intuitively known it had a door, windows, roof, etc.
That’s because you’re familiar with the general concept of a house, so I don’t even need to talk about the house facts!
Now, before you think I’m completely off topic, let’s get back to the guitar…

The good news for us guitarists is that there are scale patterns all over the guitar. By mastering those patterns, we can learn a whole bunch of notes at once, rather than one at a time. In my playing I usually only use three main scale patterns that allow me to cover the entire guitar neck.
Then I take it one step further and use a few connecting scale patterns to make them all flow together in one seamless solo.
Are there more patterns than this? Of course. There are probably hundreds of patterns on the guitar, and I don’t know of anyone who has fully categorized them all. But the ones I use and learn give me full access to the guitar, with minimal memorization.
Does it sound complicated already? It’s not!

Over 15 years ago I first picked up a guitar. Personally, however, I noticed that my guitar playing really took off when I started identifying the patterns on the fingerboard. It takes all the complicated theory out of the equation!
Does that mean you don’t need theory? Of course not! Theory is essential for your guitar playing. But I’ve found that by dealing with theory in terms of patterns, my brain can respond to information much faster and more accurately than when I’m just thinking about theory.
As I began to recognize the power of these guitar scale patterns, I began to look at them more closely, and to my great satisfaction, as I discovered more patterns on the fretboard, my playing took a whole new level!

Most of the beginner to advanced guitarists I’ve met have been trained, intentionally or not, to become glorified jukeboxes. Yes, I know, that will get a lot of people warm under their collars, but it’s the truth.

Well, it took me a while, but I finally got through both of your CDs, “Unlocking I – IV – V and Guitar Scale Patterns. I have been playing for over 40 years and am a skilled fingerpicker (Chet Atkins style) and although my favorite is country, I also like to play some classic pieces by people like Mendelssohn or Schubert, and to be honest, I wasn’t sure if I could learn much from a beginners course, but I thought it was worth a try.
