MP3 FM transmitter. If you want to enjoy your MP3 music player in your car, there are several ways to achieve this. However, you might be limited by the basic design of your car’s stereo system. If there is no cassette player, you will not be able to use most car kits. If you do not have an additional port, you will not be able to connect an adapter cable. The question remains: how do you effectively hook up your digital mp3 player? One of your final choices is an MP3 FM transmitter. However, these are not necessarily the best choices.
How the MP3 FM transmitter works
An MP3 FM transmitter works in a fairly simple way. Basically they send the music to your existing car system over any open FM channel. All you need to do is place the transmitter on your reader (be sure to choose one designed for your specific model) and locate it somewhere in the vehicle where you should be able to pick up a strong signal. It is often near your antenna.
The advantages of MP3 FM transmitter
Obviously the biggest advantage of this system is that you can finally listen to music through your existing MP3 stereo speaker and no longer have to carry your entire CD library in the car. You also don’t have to worry about replacing your existing system as all stereos include FM radios, so this method will likely work, in this regard, with any vehicle. Another plus is that some of them can be wireless as well, meaning you don’t have to worry if your car is also missing a lighter (the port normally used to power these additional devices).
The disadvantages of MP3 FM transmitter
While in some cases this may be the only option available, you may want to consider it only as a last resort if other choices are available. Part of the reason is that the sound quality is rarely that good. You’ve heard of FM stations before, so you probably have an idea of what to expect. Also, if you live in a big city with a lot of stations in use, you might have a hard time finding a free channel.
Another downside is that in many places you will lose the signal completely. This is most common as you pass tall structures and enter valleys. The lost signal problem can be quite annoying, especially when it occurs frequently.
If you want to use an MP3 with FM transmitter for your portable MP3 player in the car, be sure to read some reviews and find the best one available. The cheaper models will offer much less performance, so you want to avoid them. Plus, you’ll be less likely to find wireless options. Some of these transmitters will also work with your existing stereo, which could be a nice feature if you want to listen to your music indoors as well.
