Cars and guitars: rockabilly music and auto shows are a match made in rock and roll heaven

It’s a natural. Cool cars teamed up with hot guitars. The rockabilly music scene and the auto show circuit have become inseparable in recent years. Any good auto show these days will be enhanced by a rock band or two to keep the car crazies’ engines running during the event.

It’s no surprise that auto show organizers tend to like rockabilly. After all, if a cat loves old cars, then he probably loves old rock and roll too, and nothing is more exciting than searing rockabilly music. Hanging out at auto shows is like stepping into a different world. Car owners show off their precious possessions, admire the other guy’s good looks, trade stats and specs, look for the missing part or knowledge of their car that will finally allow them to go from perfect to perfect. And all the while, vintage car fans roam the chrome monsters, sautéed hot rods, low-key classics, and custom modified beasts that are the pride and joy of their owners.

And one thing that they enjoy almost as much as their four-wheeled lovers is the brisk pace, snap beat, twang-filled licks, and the hoarse voice of a good rockabilly band. And love flows both ways. There is nothing quite like being on stage playing with a group of fans who really enjoy what you are doing and you can see the infusion of energy that a rockabilly group receives just by being preparing to tip over in front of a crowd of car enthusiasts. Listening to rockabilly just makes the look of old cars more meaningful. And the presence of old cars makes rockabilly music even more authentic, appropriate and energetic.

As I type this it’s about 20 degrees below zero (and I’m talking Fahrenheit!) Here in the US Midwest. With that kind of cold numbing your brain, you need something to warm you up. The thought of a balmy spring afternoon wandering through a parking lot filled with muscle cars while a rockabilly guitar solo screams in the background … well, nothing moves the blood like that!

Plans are being made for the next auto shows and rockabilly bands will start booking as soon as the auto show ends one year for the same event the next day. There are plenty of opportunities throughout the summer in cooler climates and throughout the year when the weather is warmer all year round to attend a motor show it it could be a small local event or a large scale car show. And you can bet if this is a show worth the time to go, there will be a rockabilly band on stage at one point or another!
