Description:

The Slam Academy Online Programs are available to start whenever you want. Once you sign up, you’ll have instant access to over 100 hours of video, projects, session files, and more. In addition, there are several live sessions each week where students can interact face-to-face with their instructor and fellow students in an interactive video chat room.

Once a student registers for the Music Theory Online Program, they gain access to their own custom portal page. On it they have access to all class files, divided into 8 different “units”. From there, the student can go at their own pace. We recommend that this content takes 6 months to complete, just like in our in-person classes.

If the student has selected the Live Chat version of the class, they will also see a link in their portal to access the Live Chat. Students can open the chat at any time and talk to each other about what they are doing. The instructor will also indicate hours when they will be in the room.

This is an interactive online lesson from Slam Academy. Students have access to our full library of Ableton Online teaching materials, as well as optional personal live video chat.

Part 1: Working with Music Theory and the Piano Roll Editor To begin with, we’ll look at basic music theory concepts with the Ableton Live, but you can follow it in any audio program.

Part 2: The perfect fifth and what it means to be “in the key” We need to learn a few different intervals – the distance between 2 notes. Our first interval will be the fifth.

Part 3: Working more with keys, the third and the basic triad Once we have the interval of a fifth and the interval of a third, we can start building chords.

Part 4: Diatonic Chord Progressions In this section, we’ll cover the secret sauce that tells us ALL the chords that will work in ANY key.

Part 5: Seventh chords We learned how to make triads, but we can take it one step further and create more complex chords with sevenths.

Part 6: Using the Other Intervals We’ve skipped the 4th, 6th, and 2nd. But in a sense, you’ve already used them.

Part 7: Project Reviews This week we’re going to spend all our time reviewing, dissecting and analyzing your tracks, projects and assignments so far. We will share projects and jointly analyze each other’s pieces in class.

Part 8: Minor Scales and Keys In this section, we’ll cover minor scales and keys, explore some tracks that take advantage of minor keys, and do some analysis of Avicii and Deadmau5.

Part 9: The Circle of Fifths This week we’ll talk about modulating to new keys, and how to smoothly transition to a new key area using the circle of fifths.

Part 10: More chord expansions We learned triads and expanded them to seventh chords. But what if we continue – to 9ths, 11ths and 13ths. Those are real chords and have some important uses.

Part 11: Writing Melodies with Music Theory In this course we looked at how to write music using the techniques we discussed. In this section, however, I want to spend a lot of time focusing specifically on melody, scale degrees, and “trend notes”.

Part 12: Harmonics and Bassline Writing Problems Have you ever had a bassline like a bully in your mix? Thinking about the harmony and what chord tone your bass is on can help.

In this lesson, we’ll first look at the components of Live that allow us to “play” our computers – the way musicians play their instruments – LIVE. After going through each of these components in action with our instructor, we can start asking ourselves the big question: How am I going to use this in my own creative process?

Let’s look at page 46 of Making Music by Dennis DeSantis: “Write Drunk, Edit Sober.” (The textbook for this course). In this lesson, Mr. Desantis makes a strong suggestion: separate the “jam” times from the “post-production” times. This allows us to chase our muse when she appears, without being distracted by all the tools and options available during the editing phase. Here Dennis works with some mental exercises that will help us break free from the often overwhelmed headroom and into the “flow state” of improvisation and free creation.

Don’t we all want to be there? Let’s practice this together in our weekly 1 on 1 lab times via Google Hangouts, or during our recorded video feedback sessions on our projects. Every Slam Academy student gets weekly direct contact with an expert, both in “hangouts” and within recorded feedback sessions of the student works. In addition, all Slam students are immediately absorbed into the thriving community of artists, musicians, producers and sound designers that surround the Slam Academy family!

In today’s first video session, I want to focus on the Resonator.

I’d like us to first understand Resonators and then explore ways we can build our own systems from scratch using filters, delays, and LFOs, all within a single audio effects rack. After learning the fundamental principles at work here, let’s focus on how to use these principles in our tracks. I’ll show you some samples, and some tracks I’m working on with resonators.

In our weekly hangout session, I’d love to hear what you’re working on using these. Below is a live package that I outline in this video to get you started.

Many students ask us how interactive lab time works. Each student logs in from wherever they are in the world, and can optionally show their computer’s camera and microphone (so we can see each other!) The teacher starts the session with an open question session, followed by a lecture/demonstration on the lesson of the week. Just like in real life, everyone can join in the conversation and ask questions as they arise. After the lesson, there will be another free question and answer session before the week is interrupted.

Remember that each student gets the lesson of the week in videos before the lab session so they can watch it on their own time. When lab time comes, students are ready for additional reinforcement on the subject, to ensure maximum competence.

Each week, students in the Online Program submit a track to the teacher. The teacher gives valuable and encouraging critiques of the track and returns a personalized video with some suggestions for improvements. These videos are often seen by students as the most inspiring and powerful part of the entire online program! While these videos are not shared publicly and are for the student only, one student gave us permission to share one of their videos just to give you a glimpse.
