Love is a sentiment that has confused human beings since Neanderthals first looked at the campfire and in his song “I want you”, Elvis Costello understands this confusion very well. These words sum up the feelings of a person who is deeply confused by love and who misses only the tiniest little bit more from his lover than he wants to kill her. As usual with Elvis, the lyrics are also beautifully written, showcasing the man’s talent. They’re also much more direct than Costello’s usual lyrics and may have been inspired by real-life circumstances in his life.

As a child, Elvis’ parents had problems, and this ultimately led the father to find another wife. It seems like it was pretty hard for young Elvis to take, but then again, it seems almost every genius has some sort of skeleton in their closet. In fact, it’s safe to say that he got most of his skills from his father.

Heredity aside, it’s probably safe to say that the lyrics to “I Want You” come straight from Elvis’ real love life. At one point, Elvis Costello left his wife and was dating a model named Baby buell, and they have been seen in public on several occasions. However, this relationship did not last long as after a short time Elvis Costello broke this relationship and reunited with his wife and son. As the lyrics to ‘I Want You’ aptly describe, Elvis Costello couldn’t really forget his wife, hence the song to capture that feeling.

Structurally, “I Want You” is a very interesting song. The title phrase is repeated over and over again, but the accompanying lyrics put a different spin on the meaning of the words, so each time it reappears, the listener approaches it from a different perspective. With the sleight of hand of this songwriter, Elvis Costello turns what might be a dull, buzzing rehearsal exercise into a fascinating master class in the creative arts.

With the flamboyant talent he was born with, success was always imminent for Elvis, but his persistence was what ultimately turned the tide for him. He was offered a market by Island registers, but he then declined simply because, in his opinion, it was not much. This confidence is one of its most obvious and productive traits. Reflecting on the lyrics to his song “I Want You”, it’s pretty obvious that Elvis Costello always knew exactly what he wanted, and that’s what drove him to achieve great success.
