Do you memorize a sheet music by playing it over and over again, hoping that it will somehow stay in your brain after playing a song a few times? Sometimes this will work, especially if you are playing a small song.

If you’ve ever forgotten where you are at in a lesson or recital, you might want to try these ten ideas to make it easier for you to remember.

1. Learn the song before you start memorizing it.

2. Use the correct fingering.

3. Practice slowly and steadily at first.

4. Watch your hands as you play.

5. Memorize your hands separately.

6. Memorize small sections, maybe one or two bars of music. Don’t try to memorize the whole song in one day.

7. Divide the room into sections and plan to learn a few each day. Then go through all the sections. Start anywhere and play through sections A and B of a song. Concentrate on the end of the song, so by knowing the last bar, you can end with a bang.

8. Analyze the music. Note any repeating notes and sections. Pay attention to where the music changes. Memorize the dynamics and other markings of the song.

9. Mentally practice away from the piano, tap your fingers on the table, or visualize the music in front of you.

10. Rehearsal.

Many teachers consider memorization to be one of the most important aspects of the piano. Most books, which deal with memorization mode, stress the importance of understanding the details of musical form. So, start a music opening phrase and learn it without the music.

Then consider the physical demands of the piece of music. Look for the delicate fingering that occurs at any given time. Play it several times over and over, remember the feeling. Are your hands playing together or separately? Are they moving in opposite directions? What notes does the thumb go on?

Whenever you hit a blind spot, you need to refer to the printed music. Remember, when you reach your first empty moment, open your music book and find the spot in the music that you don’t remember. Play it several times. You have now started to deepen your understanding of the song.

Most importantly, play the song you have memorized every once in a while as some memorization is only short lived. The benefits of following these points are numerous. By memorizing, the music unfolds in a new way.
